Title:Important information for 100K Solo Runners... 50K Solo should read this too

[Default Report Image]Dear 100K and 50K Solo Runners,

The Mad City 100K is the US national championship race and a qualifier for Team USA. It is one of my goals to make the experience as close to "real" to the World Championship 100K race as possible, even for you 50K runners. There are two areas of technical compliance which generate more uncertainty/anxiety than other issues: (1) "aid" to runners during the race, and (2) what I'll call "listening devices". I'll address the "aid" questions in this message. I addressed the "listening devices" questions in my message #5 .

The "aid" rule is really quite simple and runner-friendly. (USA Track & Field copies the International Association of Ultrarunners (I.A.U.) in this regard.) In short, the runner and his/her crew can do just about anything as long as it's done in the right place. "The right place" is at or very near either of the two official aid stations. Exactly how close is being checked right now with the I.A.U. authorities, and I'll let you know in time for the race.

Attached to this message is a copy of the course map. The two official aid stations are marked on the map. They are at the Start/Finish line (Mile 0) and in the University of Wisconsin Arboretum (which we just call the Arb), between the 3 and 4 mile marks. There is also a location marked as "Fred's Water Station"; Fred's is not an official aid station, so crews cannot help with giving aid to runners there, but water will be available for the runners on a more-or-less self-serve basis.

At both of the official aid stations, you runners can have your own personal drinks, foods, and clothing. In the Arb, because of concerns about motor traffic, crews are discouraged from going there. Instead - and this optional, not obligatory - you can bring a bag or box with your "personal stuff" to the Start/Finish aid station on the morning of race day, and these will be transported to the Arb aid station for you. Volunteers will set up your stuff at the Arb aid station so that you can have access to it each and every time they go around the course. (Maybe we won't get everything set up perfectly for the first loop, but bear with us and it will be ready for you on the second loop.) Given that you will be doing 10K loops, you will soon be back to the start/finish aid station where your crew can meet you and minister to your other needs. I hope you will agree that there is little or no advantage to have crew members at the Arb aid station, and it is very beneficial to the runners and the race if crews stay away.

At the Start/Finish aid station, there is plenty of room for your crews. The medical staff will be there. Most vehicles can be parked there. The park shelter is there. I will be there. In short, this should be the primary site for your personal headquarters. Just as in the Arb, your personal drinks and food can be set up at the Start/Finish aid station and available for a grab-and-go on a table adjacent to the general aid tables. Extra shoes, clothing, etc. can be dropped nearby.

Port-a-potties will be set up at both of the official aid stations.

Timo.
